What MOT Type 1 is
Type 1 is crushed rock, usually limestone or granite, graded from dust up to about 40mm. The mix of sizes is the point: the small bits fill the gaps between the big bits, so it locks together when you compact it.
You will also see it called sub-base, DTp1, crushed hardcore or Type 1 limestone. They all mean the same thing for a garden or driveway job.
How deep to lay it
For a path, patio or shed base, about 100mm once compacted is usual. For a driveway that takes cars, go to about 150mm. For vans or heavier use, 200mm or more.
Lay it in layers of about 75 to 100mm and go over each layer with a wacker plate before adding the next. It sinks as you compact it, which is why the calculator adds 10% to what you measure.
Type 1 or 6F2 crushed concrete?
6F2 is recycled crushed concrete and brick. It is usually cheaper and fine for bulk fill, tracks and under hardstanding. For a patio or a drive where you want a firm, even base, most people use Type 1.

Questions about MOT Type 1
How much Type 1 do I need for a 10m² patio?
At 100mm deep, about 2.1 tonnes, or about 2.4 tonnes with 10% for compaction. That is two trips in our tipper.
Can you deliver less than a tonne?
Yes. We carry up to 1.3 tonnes a trip, so half a tonne for a small shed base is fine.
Where do you tip it?
On the drive or as close to the job as the tipper can get. Tell us about gates, slopes and where you want it.
Do I need to compact Type 1?
Yes. Loose Type 1 will settle under slabs or cars. Compact each layer with a wacker plate, which you can hire locally by the day.
