Using gravel on a drive
Lay gravel on top of a compacted Type 1 base, not straight onto soil. About 40 to 50mm of 20mm shingle is plenty. Go much deeper and tyres sink in and it moves about. A weed membrane under the gravel keeps weeds down.
Borders and drainage
For borders and paths, about 40mm over membrane looks neat. For French drains and soakaways, 20mm or 40mm shingle is used to fill the trench around the pipe, so the depth is the depth of the trench.

Questions about 20mm shingle
How much gravel for a drive?
At 50mm deep, one tonne of 20mm shingle covers about 12.5m². A single car drive of about 15m² needs about 1.2 tonnes, which fits in one trip.
Is 20mm or 10mm gravel better for a drive?
20mm is better for drives because it moves less under tyres. 10mm pea shingle is nicer underfoot for paths.
