What building sand is for
Building sand (also called soft sand, bricklaying sand or yellow sand) is for mortar. A common mortar mix is about 1 part cement to 4 or 5 parts building sand, often with a plasticiser to make it easier to work.
It is not for bedding slabs or making concrete. For those you want sharp sand or ballast.
How much you need
Mortar use depends on the brick and joint size, so the easiest way is to tell us what you are building and roughly how big. Most garden walls and small extensions need well under a tonne at a time. If in doubt, send a photo of the job and we will tell you.

Questions about Building sand
Can I use building sand under patio slabs?
It is better to use sharp sand under slabs. Building sand is too soft and can move. Use building sand for the mortar joints.
Can you bring cement and plasticiser as well?
Yes, we can collect bagged goods from a merchant on the same run. Tell us what you need when you order.
